2025 June: “Beyond the Miles” – Road Runner Christal Espinoza
2025 Jun VFE Featured Athlete – Christal Espinoza. Sport: Road Runner
In 2010, after my softball career ended, I found myself less active and gaining weight. Despite a lifelong dislike for running, I started with a humble 16-minute mile. Seeking structure, I joined a jogging class at Cerritos College, motivated by the simple rule of showing up. My mile and a half final unexpectedly led to recruitment by the Cross-Country coach. Hesitantly, I joined practice the following Monday. Coach Cruz’s casual announcement of a “moderate” 70-minute run shocked me, as I typically only ran 2-3 miles. Yet, I surprisingly kept pace, chatting and laughing effortlessly with the other runners. This immediate love for running made me eager for the next practice.
In 2013 I joined the Los Angeles Sheriff Department which introduced me to the well-known Baker to Vegas relay, increasing my love for running beyond the 5K and 10K distance. This experience, though not initially competitive, fueled my ambition. By 2018, I ran my first marathon for my 30th birthday, overcoming beginner challenges and injuries to finish under four hours. This accomplishment sparked an addiction to the marathon distance, leading me to join the highly competitive LASD Elite Running team for Baker to Vegas. I have now completed nine marathons since then.

In 2024, I accomplished a significant goal by completing the Boston 2 Big Sur challenge, running both marathons just thirteen days apart. Finishing my first Boston Marathon was a huge victory, especially after five years of injuries and narrowly missing a qualifying time. This accomplishment of covering 52.4 miles across two coasts stands as one of my proudest achievements. My current ambition is to complete all six World Major Marathons, with Boston and Chicago done, I am two-thirds of the way there.
Running has consistently presented challenges, with injuries often interrupting my peak fitness. Yet, experience has cultivated mental resilience, transforming setbacks into stronger comebacks. An Achilles injury in 2024 couldn’t stop me from running Boston 2 Big Sur. After a hamstring injury sidelined me for most of this year, I strategically rested and focused on recovery. With Baker to Vegas and Boston approaching in April, I used Baker to Vegas as preparation to build confidence for Boston. Despite only three weeks of training leading up to Boston, my mental strength propelled me to a remarkable 3:43 finish, surpassing my 3:45 goal and underscoring the mind’s power over physical limits.

Since 2023, Vision for Enrichment (VFE) has been instrumental in my running journey, consistently helping me overcome injuries and achieve my race goals. My initial experience with VFE in 2023 involved a post-race massage that provided immediate relief for a lingering quad injury, leading to full recovery. Their support continued through a 2024 Achilles injury, enabling me to run Boston 2 Big Sur. In 2025, the dedicated VFE team, including Rich, Andres, and Steven, were crucial in my recovery from a hamstring injury, ensuring I could participate in the Boston Marathon for the second time. I am incredibly grateful for the collaborative and personalized care provided by VFE’s therapists, who genuinely act as a supportive family, committed to keeping me running.
Running isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a vital part of my daily life, allowing me to balance a full-time job, church commitments, volunteering, and precious moments with loved ones. This sport has blessed me with incredible, lifelong friendships forged within its truly inspiring community. While I’ve long embraced the pavement, I’m now venturing onto the trails, eager to discover new challenges. Every run pushes my boundaries and serves as a powerful reminder of self-belief: our minds dictate our reality, and where the mind leads, the body will follow. What began as a reluctant pursuit has blossomed into a profound and unwavering love.
